Bringing stories to life: A new look for the Catt Center display case

CATEGORIES: January 2025, Voices

This article is the first in a series by Catt Center staff, interns and graduate assistants intended to provide an inside perspective on some of the work we do at the center and the people who do this work.

By Melissa Martin, Catt Center administrative assistant

When I first joined the Catt Center, one of the first tasks that came across my desk was to refresh the display case on the third floor of Catt Hall. Although design wasn’t my academic background, I’ve always had a passion for creative projects. My previous experience as a manager at a local Main Street shop had given me the chance to exercise my creativity—whether it was rearranging displays weekly or changing seasonal decorations to draw in customers. While my new role isn’t about selling products, the idea of showcasing something valuable, something worth celebrating, stayed with me.

The Catt Center isn’t selling anything per se, but the incredible work our interns, scholars and staff are doing to fulfill the center’s mission is significant: Our center is about empowerment, education, and progress, and it felt only fitting that the display case would reflect that mission and highlight that work.

As I started brainstorming a vision for the display, I focused on a few key elements that I wanted to highlight:

  1. Legacy of Heroines Scholars
Every year, we are proud to welcome a new cohort of the Legacy of Heroines scholars. These remarkable students of diverse backgrounds embody the spirit of leadership and change that the Catt Center stands for. We’re excited to feature the 2024-2025 scholars and what sparks their academic goals.
  2. Outstanding Interns
The Catt Center has long been home to some of the brightest interns who do amazing work behind the scenes. From political activism to research and advocacy, the work our interns do provides them with invaluable experience while contributing to important causes. The display features a snippet of their accomplishments, shining a light on the varied range of skills and passions they bring to the table.
  3. Our Programs and Upcoming Events
In addition to celebrating the people who make the Catt Center what it is, I wanted to ensure that we highlighted the programs we offer. From leadership development such as our biennial Ready to Run® Iowa workshops, honoring remarkable women in the Plaza of Heroines, academic scholarships, and our “Toward a Universal Suffrage” traveling exhibit, our programs are designed to support women as they grow into the leaders of tomorrow. The display case will feature information about these programs, as well as upcoming events and initiatives designed to inspire and engage both students and the broader community.
  4. Carrie Chapman Catt’s Legacy
Of course, no display in Catt Hall would be complete without honoring the woman whose name is synonymous with leadership and change: Carrie Chapman Catt. As an ISU alumna, a suffragist, and an advocate for women’s rights, Catt’s impact on both Iowa and the nation is immeasurable. The history of her work, her influence, and her legacy are an integral part of the display, reminding everyone who walks by that this building and the center it houses stand on the foundation of her extraordinary contributions.

This display case is more than just a place to showcase materials—it’s a living, breathing reflection of what we stand for here at the Catt Center. It’s a celebration of our past, our present, and the future we are actively shaping. It’s a visual story of empowerment, leadership, and the remarkable individuals who are part of the Catt Center family.

But the display won’t be static. Every semester, we plan to subtly update and refresh it, so be sure to stop by more than once! As new projects, events, and scholars emerge, the case will evolve to reflect the continued growth and impact of the Catt Center community. Whether you’re a student, a staff member, faculty, or just someone passing through Catt Hall, I encourage you to take a moment to stop by, learn about the incredible people we’re honoring, and get inspired to make a difference.
