The Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics is pleased to recognize the accomplishments and activities of its faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters:
Carrie Ann Johnson, interim research and outreach coordinator for the Catt Center, published “The Purpose of Whisper Networks: A New Lens for Studying Informal Communication Channels in Organizations,” in the May 19 issue of Frontiers in Communication. In July, Johnson was named a recipient of the Graduate College’s 2023 Postdoctoral Scholar Excellence Award for Teaching and Mentoring Students, which honors postdoctoral scholars who have made innovative and significant contributions to training future scientists and who exemplify excellence in the teaching and learning mission of Iowa State. Letters of support for the award were submitted by center director Karen M. Kedrowski and student interns Kathryn Burns, Mariana Gonzalez and Ashleigh O’Brien.
Karen M. Kedrowski, center director, was a panelist on the May 9 episode of the APSA Civic Engagement Section’s Civic Café podcast, “Inviting Speakers to Campus: What Should You Consider?” Kedrowski was a guest on Iowa Public Radio’s River to River on May 10, June 14 and June 21. She was interviewed by KGAN statehouse reporter Sklar Tallal on May 10 about the Republican candidates who have officially declared their candidacy for president, on June 13 regarding the impact former President Trump’s indictment will have on his presidential campaign in Iowa, and on June 15 about President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan.
On May 18, Kedrowski presented “Not Done: The ERA at 100” at a Learn with the League event at the Ames Public Library sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Ames and Story County. On May 23, she was interviewed by Jennifer Taylor of East Wing Magazine about Rosalyn Carter’s decision to establish an office in the East Wing of the White House. On June 14, she was interviewed by Jennifer Jacobs of Bloomberg News about GOP candidates campaigning and running ads in Iowa. On June 15, Kedrowski gave a presentation about the Catt Center to The Consortium, a breakfast club for professional women in Des Moines. On July 5, she spoke with producer Madeline Leigh of Local 5 News We Are Iowa (WOI-DT) about the special session of the Iowa legisture called by Gov. Reynolds to enact anti-abortion legislation.
Krista Klocke has started a new position as an instructor development coordinator at the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) at Iowa State University. Klocke, a Phyllis Davis Legacy of Heroines scholar from 2013-2016, earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and communication studies in 2016, a master’s degree in rhetoric and professional communication in 2018 and a Ph.D. in rhetoric and professional communication in May, all from Iowa State.
Elizabeth Yaddof, the 8-year-old granddaughter of long-time Catt Center friend and donor Kay Kretschmar Runge, made Iowa and Carrie Chapman Catt the subject of her school’s State Fair exhibit. Yaddof attends school in Thornton, Colorado.
