The Center for Cyclone Civics welcomed Denisse Camarena as a new administrative assistant in February, and is looking to hire a post-doctoral research associate to start in August.
An Iowa State alumna, Camarena earned a bachelor’s degree in animal ecology and a minor in forestry before moving to Nebraska, where she served as an outdoor education assistant at Ponca State Park. In that role, she developed strong attention to detail, strengthened her organizational and time management skills, and built a foundation that will translate to her new position.

At Cyclone Civics, Camarena assists with planning and preparing programs and events while building interdepartmental relationships. She is also working to identify ways to strengthen civic engagement across the university.
Once renovation of the space is complete, Camarena’s office will be located in 555 Ross Hall, which will also be the home of the Center for Cyclone Civics. In the meantime, Camarena is working out of the Catt Center office. Regardless of where you find her, Camarena welcomes students to stop by, introduce themselves, and learn more about getting involved.
As an undergraduate, Camarena said she felt distanced from civic involvement on campus. Returning to Iowa State has changed her perspective.
“When I was a student here, I was too shy to get involved in civic programs and clubs,” Camarena said. “Coming back and seeing this opportunity felt like the right time to step into civic engagement and public service. I want to give students like me the opportunity I didn’t have and help them build strong civic skills that will carry with them throughout their lives.”
Outside of the office, Camarena is an avid disc golf enthusiast. Introduced to the sport by her partner, she quickly turned it into a favorite hobby and has since competed in several tournaments, adding a competitive edge to her passion for the game.
“It’s a great way to get outside, unplug from screens and spend time in nature,” Camarena said.
Cyclone Civics is also looking for a post-doctoral research associate to start in August to help establish the center’s research agenda. The position will remain open until filled, but for fullest consideration, applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on March 13, 2026.
The Center for Cyclone Civics promotes civic literacy, civic skills and civic disposition through partnerships on and off campus. The center is nonpartisan and does not advocate for or against any political party, candidate or ideological position.
