‘Toward a Universal Suffrage’ Traveling Exhibit

Learn about Iowa’s history with an exhibit about Iowa’s African American suffragists

“Toward a Universal Suffrage” is a traveling exhibit about the contributions of African American women in Iowa to the women’s suffrage movement. It is available for display at organizations and events around the state, including schools, museums, and libraries.

The exhibit includes:

• Profiles of five African American suffragists in Iowa
• An overview of African American women’s suffrage
• A timeline and history of African American voting rights
• A map of African American suffrage locations in Iowa

“Toward a Universal Suffrage” was developed as a collaboration between the Iowa Department of Human Rights’ Office on the Status of Women, the Central Iowa Community Museum, and the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics.
