The Catt Center has been working closely with Cyclone Civics on plans for the “America at 250” celebration for the upcoming academic year, and we are proud to co-sponsor several of these events this fall:
Sept. 15: Jeffry Flake—former U.S. ambassador to Turkey (2022-2024) and a former U.S. senator from Arizona (2013-2019)—will present Iowa State’s 2025 Constitution Day Lecture, “When Congress Steps Back: A Call for Restoring Constitutional Balance in Governance,” at 6 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.
Sept. 25: David M. Rabban—Dahr Jamail, Randall Hage Jamail, and Robert Lee Jamail Regents Chair in Law and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas School of Law—will present the 2025 Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Lecture, “Academic Freedom: From Professional Norm to First Amendment Right,” at 6 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Rabban’s teaching and research focus on free speech, academic freedom, higher education and the law, and American legal history.
Oct. 1: Eugene Robinson—Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and political analyst at MSNBC—will present the 2025 Manatt-Phelps Lecture in Political Science, “Revolution or Evolution? A Media Transformed and Its Impact on You,” at 6 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.
Oct. 2: Danielle Allen—James Bryant Conant University Professor, director of the Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, and director of the Democratic Knowledge Project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education—will present “Do Words Matter? The Language of Liberty in the Declaration of Independence” at 6 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union.
Nov. 5: Alexander Hall—teaching professor in classical studies and Latin—will present “Ancient Greeks and Romans and the American Founding” at 6 p.m. in Room 2630 of the Memorial Union. Hall joined the faculty of the Department of World Languages and Cultures in 2015.
Nov. 12: Sebastian Braun—director of the American Indian Studies Program and professor of political science—will present “Indigenous Peoples and the American Constitution” at 6 p.m. in Room 2630 of the Memorial Union. Braun has been at Iowa State University since 2015.
Nov 13: Amanda Knief—director of the Lectures Program and university parliamentarian—will present “How Pirates Saved the American Revolution” at 6 p.m. in Room 2630 of the Memorial Union.
